In 2017, Digitales Media released an awareness raising episode of this long time running animation series, that tackled the issue of sexual abuse against children. The response from our audience was staggering!
Thousands of women and children wrote to us on our various platforms, to tell us their stories and asked for help and insight. This led us to put together an online response team of counselors, on our various social media platforms, to help point people to resources and therapists around the region.
Caregivers, teachers, and lay counselors from refugee camps reached out asking us to create content to help them navigate various mental health issues facing children in refugee camps and rural areas.
They asked for help as many of them are not equipped to deal with children experiencing symptoms of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and toxic stress (where children live under stressful circumstances for long periods of time, enduring stressors such as: family separation, evacuations, starvation, domestic violence, bullying, etc.)
As a result of this response and the immense need before us, we put together a task force with our printing partners, Jabal Amman Publishers (who created a print form of Amal) and Dr. Issam Smeir (a licensed clinical professional counsellor, based in Chicago, who specialises in working with refugees and victims of torture).
The purpose of this task force was to educate ourselves on how best to address the urgent mental health needs emerging in our region through media. Thus Project Amal was born.
This collaborative effort produced the Amal Animation Series and website (by Digitales Media), and the Amal Book Series (by Jabal Amman Publishers).
The creation of this project has spanned three years, as Digitales Media worked with a team of over 100 world-class professionals (artists, scriptwriters, animators, musicians and psychologists) from across the globe to bring this series to life. This incredible experience convinced us that Amal is a labor of love that resonates beyond borders, culture and language.
